I was wondering if anyone had come across where to enquire/find the records for the House of Compassion, Pimlico around 1910/1911? The actual address was 61/63 Sutherland Street, St. George Hanover Square, London and was a home for unmarried mothers run by a charity. The 1911 census shows the residents and children at the time at the home and I can see baptisms of some of those residents/children living there at that time but these records don't answer my little mystery!
Also has anyone heard if it was not uncommon for an unmarried mother around that time to take the opportunity to baptise themselves under a new christian name in order to have a fresh start?
I have just discovered that a relative on my Husbands side of the family had their child baptised whilst living at 61 Sutherland Street in 1926. Any info you have on the organisation would be lovely. If I come across anything myself will let you know.
As far as I can tell this relatives Mother kept her own name and went on to marry in 1935.
I haven't been able to find any further information on the address or charity myself. I am having trouble finding my Great Grandmother in any official records with the details we had, but have found a woman at this address that may provide a link and maybe some answers. I hope you have more luck than I have had so far.
All I managed to learn was there is only one record of the House of Compassion in a charity digest 1910 that gives some background to the home. 12 beds took women aged 13-25 at a cost of 6s to 7s per week. The women could stay for six months to a year. Not much more information known.
